Chanderi is one of the most imitated weaves in India — which means it's also one of the easiest to get fooled on, if you don't know what to look for.

Hold It to the Light

A genuine Chanderi saree is sheer enough to glow softly when held up to light. Power-loom imitations tend to look flat and opaque, no matter how fine the print looks.

Feel the Weight

Real Chanderi is famously light — often described as 'woven air.' If a “Chanderi silk” saree feels heavy or stiff, that's usually the first sign it isn't genuine.

Check the Motif, Not Just the Pattern

Authentic Chanderi motifs are woven by hand with a separate needle, which means they feel slightly raised and are visible on the reverse side of the fabric. Printed imitations are flat, front only.

Look for the GI Tag
